Modern Mum’s Guide to Housework

Being the woman who has it all can be tough because it often means you’re also the woman who does it all. Despite women making huge strides in the workplace, they can still end up doing the majority of the “traditional” parenting and housework as well. Many families today have a much more equal division of domestic labour, but that doesn’t necessarily make it easy to hold down a job, be a parent and keep the house clean and tidy. If you find it a struggle, the answer might be in rethinking how you approach anything you need to do.

Don’t Do It Alone

If you’re a single parent, you can’t really avoid doing the majority of the housework, if not all of it. If you’re married or have a partner you live with, you can make things more equal, so you don’t have to do it all yourself. But even if you are on your own, there is one way you can get some help. Even toddlers can do their bit to help out a little around the house, and it helps them to learn valuable skills. Start your kids early on pitching in with the housework, and they’ll learn responsibility and pride in their work. Plus, you can turn it into a game to make it fun.

Master Doing a Quick Job

When you’re a parent, you quickly learnt that there’s not enough time to spend hours perfecting every job you do. Even if you’re a perfectionist, you can’t scrub the bathtub until it’s sparkling when you have to get to work or make dinner. But just because you have to do things a little more quickly, it doesn’t mean you can’t still do a good job. Try timing yourself to get faster at doing the jobs you spend a long time doing. One thing that can help is doing a little at a time. For example, if you don’t have time to vacuum the whole house from top to bottom, just do one room at a time.

Get the Right Tools for Gardening

Gardens are great for families, giving you somewhere to have fun outside and allowing for family pets too. But, like houses and flats, they need to be cared for. Even a low-maintenance garden will need some looking after. If you have the right tools, it can be a lot easier to manage a garden. Swell stock a huge range of pond vacs to make it easier to take care of ponds and other water features. You can get a robot mower to take care of your lawn, so you don’t have to spend time doing it. The same can work for inside the house. A steam cleaner could be the answer to all your problems.

Find Ways to Prevent Mess

Preventing mess in the first place is often better than cleaning it up. But that’s easier said than done when you have kids. Still, there are ways to make your home neater, like having plenty of storage available to throw things in whenever you need to.
Housework and chores at home are necessary evils. If you can’t get a cleaner, at least you can make it all a bit easier.
