About me

I’m Nicola, 38, from County Durham. I’m a recovering travelling fanatic (mostly Asia), 90s indie music fan, and owner of about 75% Orla Kiely’s back catalogue.

Mum to two boys: RLT – our rainbow baby who was born in June 2016 and EET who was born in September 2018. My journey to get here wasn’t easy.

I’m also a cat guardian to a sassy Russian Blue, named Orla Kitty. This blog is an online journal; Something that I can look back on as a reminder of the boys’ childhoods scattered with the odd review, which kept my mind active during maternity leave.

Parenting has so far been the best thing I have ever done in my life, but also the hardest. There is no book that tells me how to deal with a toddler who is experiencing speech delay, navigating the constant worry of ‘is he going to get there in the end’, or are we dealing with something bigger? Needless to say, this has caused a lot of anxiety as does having another toddler who sees everything has something to conquer – he has admirable skills in being able to tackle anything head on – quite literally sometimes!

About Me

Hello and welcome! I’m Nicola, 38, from the North East of England. Recovering travelling fanatic, 90s indie music fan, MSc student and owner of about 75% Orla Kiely’s back catalogue. Probably the least assertive mother in County Durham, raising two very assertive boys under the age of six.

There has been a lot of house football this week during our introduction to chickenpox.

Chickenpox, nits and itchy bum worms are the things I've been dreading! We've thankfully avoided everything for almost 6 years!

This little fella heals like Wolverine and has tried to teach me how to play Fifa (fail).

The little one remains fine and has bounced all of the walls all week. I hope he avoids it!

Elijah's decided this whole chickenpox ordeal will be over faster for everyone if he just sits on his brother until he gets it 🤷‍♀️
He just talks about football now 😭 I miss him talking about SpongeBob Squarepants.

We're big fans of going to Raby Castle anyway (it's a 6% battery ride in the car 🤣), so were interested to see what the new play area would offer.
.
After being a bit miffed at being told to park in the usual visitor parking, then having to walk up the same narrow road people were then driving up; I felt a bit annoyed, like it was rushed open and the ushers clearly weren't thinking about safety.
.
My kids enjoyed it. At 5 and 3 I didn't really like how I couldn't see where they were going to end up when they climbed high. The slide was every man for himself by 11am. 5 year old was fine, but I lost sight of him a few times. I think I'll stick to soft play 🤣
.
Loved the usual deer park and the Easter Egg hunt. The walled gardens are closed at the moment as is the court yard area you can usually use for cafe and shops, but they have made other space.
.
5 year old has already asked to go back, but I don't think I'd take his brother for a little while. Just my opinion of course.
.
A big massive win was that 5 year old asked for Avocado and courgette cake at the café, it has to be the most veg he's ever eaten 🤣
